Meet the artist:
As a Mixed race Black Woman raised by a white family, I did not have the ability to trace my ancestry when it came to my African lineage. It’s a very common happening; the era of chattel slavery and indigenous genocide wiped away familial connections for many.
Now that the world seems to be looking in a mirror, I found myself trying to look past this roadblock on my path to understand who I am and where I come from.
I want to connect with, honor, and praise the people who came before me and guide me on the daily. How do I thank someone if I don’t know their name? How do I find their name if it was stolen from them? How can I let them know: “this alter is for you!”?
Countless other questions kept popping up until I sat with that missed connection feeling, and an idea came to me.
I created this image so that I, and anyone else who cannot trace their history beyond a certain point, can have a reminder that they are not alone. That even if you don’t know who is connected to you, you are still connected-someone has your back. You can give thanks to your ancestry without naming them.
I intend to hang this on my own ancestral alter, and I hope that having something acknowledging
their presence will send a little love back into the ether.
