  • WHAT DOES PRIDE MEAN TO YOU?

In a single word, pride means "celebration" to me. It is an annual celebration of the people we are, the community we share, and the love we have inside us. It is a celebration of visibility and empowerment! During pride, I feel connected to my queer community, and love to see everyone out doing their thing, whether that's at the parade, a dance party, or their own unique celebrations.

One of my favorite things to see at pride is the participation of the young people; they have such courage and confidence walking into their budding queer selves, and that is worth celebrating! Every queer person has their own identity journey - pride is a celebration of those individual journeys and the community they create together.

Jonathan grew up in the suburbs of Sacramento, California, later inhabiting northern California with long stints of beach life in Santa Cruz and big-city livin’ in San Francisco. He has been an Oregon resident for the last eight years and is continually inspired by the clean air, default friendly demeanor, and general appreciation for sunny days.

"I am a screenprinter who is curious about the ever-changing world around me, and the expectation to keep up. My work is inspired by my queer experience, pop culture, and the emerging importance and influence of technology in our everyday lives. I am fascinated by the process of human robotization, and the challenge of disconnection in our media-heavy world. What separates humans from other animals is the ability to use tools, so why have these tools made us in turn, less human, and more robotic?

Screenprinting is a process as complex and messy as you make it, with a margin of error that increases in relation to the mess and complexity of the work. I can relate to messy and complex."

In 1902 the building we now call Jailbreak was erected as the first southeast Police Department, built on land that belongs to the Chinook, Cowlitz, and Clackamas tribes. Honoring the land we live on and the accuracy of history matters, acknowledgment matters, showing respect is required. 🌎 If you are interested in learning more about the tribes and land you have built your life on, and you would like to honor the people who came before you, the Native Land app is free, and owned and operated by the Indigenous non profit Native Land Digital.
